Ain't this the best time of year!

I agree Bathgate, love it having a greenhouse with red tomatoes, at last. Thanks Linda :).
Karen, the variety is a hybrid named Big Boy :)
My toms are loads better this year in their raised beds with their feet warm with under soil electric trace heating.

Seems like you've cracked it Dawn!

Fingers crossed Karen, no blight so far. I grew amazing toms for years then after the wet damp summer of 2007+, blight arrive and rubbish ever since until this year. My Dad would be proud of me this year :)

That's huge Dawn !! Never heard of that variety.
I didn't grow any this year.

Know just what you mean that's why I didn't bother.

Hi Kathy :-) Very tempermental arent they. You know how you Dad was into day lillies, well my Dad was a brilliant tomato grower and I have his greenhouse and feel I should follow in his footsteps. They are good so far this year. Blight has wrecked them for years until now, the raised beds have been brilliant (so far). Big Boy is quite an old hybrid. Huge, yummy.

I have mine in pots, but no saucers so they drain very freely. No blight so far and wonder if thats part of the reason.

I have mine in bottom less pots, sitting in compost in the raised beds. The blight is a spore Karen, lots of ventilation required to avoid it but cold damp conditions not ideal. I gave mine lots of venilation but still got blight until this year, i think getting them off the ground has worked. All was fine until we got wet summers a few years ago and the blight set and and didnt go. We thoroughly cleaned everywhere and used Jeyes Fluid etc but to no avail.

A good thick layer of mulch helps prevent the blight from taking hold though nothing is guaranteed.

Thanks Bathgate. All tips welcome. Dare blight.

Your dad would be proud Dawn especially with the way you've persevered in order to follow in his footsteps ,I'm envious ours aren't very good this year mainly because we've been away so much and neglected them ,the boys are here on holiday I'll try to catch up on here ASAP x

Thanks Amy. Enjoy your time with the boys. x

Great tomato Dawn. Our Shirley and Gardeners Delight are producing well in the greenhouse this year. I made some tomato soup a few days ago. If we grow tomatoes outside they seem to get blight.

Thanks Linda. Yum, tomato soup. Good idea. My moneymaker are loaded. I think you get far better tomatoes if grown in the greenhouse. Darn blight, we dont want that, do we.
