Slugs have just about demolished my silver Brunnera, Looking Glass but don't seem interested in B.Jack Frost. It's difficult to know how best to deal with them.

Mari we are finding those great big fat slugs huge things under terracotta pots they are really disgusting , I put one pot in a bucket of salt water but the darn things kept climbing up the sides to escape in the end Tony took them and put them in the ditch away from the garden ,Yuk !

They'll be back I'm afraid, Amy. I keep a coffee jar with strong salt solution & hot water & put the ones I find in it (using my trowel). My hostas are just coming thru so I'm being vigilant!

Mari I believe these huge slugs are what they call 'Killer Slugs ' Spanish slugs first appeared in Norfolk in 2012 they are voracious and cannabilistic eating whole crops and small animals I have a video of one eating a small creature on a path in France the last time we were there ,I agree I should have put ours in boiling water ,The John Inns center is saying they carry germs and that we should use bleach to sterilise buckets etc.Yukky things ..

Oh how gross! I had to look them up & the reports are alarming, from what I read it seems you have the big black ones (not Spanish ones) & the advice is put them in boiling water as the Spanish ones are immune to poisons & too slimy for predators to eat. They also lay twice as many eggs as our native slugs.

*From article:
Despite their name, Spanish slugs could have originated in western France.
They eat dead or weaker members of their own species and other slugs.
Like all slugs, they are hermaphrodites – meaning just one can produce an infestation.
The Spanish slugs adapted to hot climates, where eggs are at risk of drying out, by laying hundreds.
However, in our wet weather, most survive.
Predators such as hedgehogs, and ducks control slugs – but this species is less likely to be tackled by these animals.
A Cannibal slug is brownish in colour, is typically between eight and 12cm long and can be found in most of Europe.
A typical black slug, in comparison, is normally between 10 and 12cm long and is mostly found in northern Europe.
It is omnivorous, feeding mostly on dead animals, fungi and vegetation.
