Agree with Karen, strange name for a black flower, think Gnarly's name is more suited, or Black Beauty.

I do not know, if it was true, but read somewhere, that black flowers do not exist and every such flower is a trick with fertilizers and dyes.
If this flower will be black next year I will believe, that scientists were wrong.

I must admit my first thought was that it was wrongly named , you can just about see the label tacked onto the pot in the photo ,it should have been Black beauty / velvet or Midnight ,or maybe it is as Gg & Gf are saying Black Star ... That's an interesting point Kat, I will do that and take a photo next year ...

They aren't winter hardy, are they? Our local florist say they are hardy, but my friend along the road, lost hers.

Siris, a house by me has one growing in the front garden but its very well drained soil , and all leaves no flowers yet ?

The instructions on this label tells me to let the plants nearly dry out before re-watering to avoid them becoming to wet also to protect from frost and keep very dry over winter ,almost impossible if it was planted in the garden I would say ... I'll bring it inside for the winter ...

Wow! just Wow! I have the white ones and have collected the corms each autumn for about 10 years...every year I plant them in a new spot and they tell me about the fertility and drainage of different spots along the stream...I've even had them growing in a fish pond...no soil at all! just the fish detritus which they thrive on! lovely plants..and that true black is just amazing!

...well Amy, just when you think.... I've mentioned before that we're having a very hot and extremely dry July. All the corms (?) I've planted have started with leaves and most are blooming but I have to keep them watered and even the large corms I planted are only producing puny looking leaves and a short flower stock. We have had rain but most of it is lost to evaporation and the soil is so dry that water puddles rather than soaking in... long story short, I hope we get rain and lots of it, very soon.
