They look very nice, Brian! The autumn sunshine makes them look even better!

Harbingers of Spring, if only.

I have some clumps around one of the apple trees that are determined to lie on top of the soil. I keep burying them but they keep popping out. I don't know whether to chuck compost over them or keep disturbing the roots by digging them back under the surface. I can only think that the apple tree roots keep pushing them out. What do you think Brian?

Karen, what about blackbirds. I have seen some uprooting my snowdrops bulbs whilst digging for worms.

Well, perhaps, but the whole clump is lying on top...very neat...not damaged.

Karen i have seen this in a few places in the garden as though the roots push them up rather than normal which is to pull them down,I must admit I have just recovered them with a bit of compost and forgotten about it.
it is interesting .Will have a read in in my snowdrop encyclopedia and see if there is any mention.
I think the birds would only pull them out if the roots are not established.

Thinking about it if your soil is light birds might well pull them out I tend to think of my soil which is heavy clay and there is no way a bird will remove them ,it is quite difficult to dig them out.

Yes, pretty heavy soil here too Brian. I'll chuck some compost over them. The trees will benefit from a mulch too. :) Thanks

Luckily your clumps seem fixed, as you say depends on the soil and gravel must help keeping them in place.

Karen it seems it happens when there is hard soil below and apparently not confined to snowdrops ,Narcissus and scillas do it and from the sound of it probably other things as well

I think I'll plant them elsewhere. They will just keep on doing it.
