I really love chaenomeles. I bought one recently that has red flowers and a more upright, shrub like habit. But it looks like the bad weather has taken its toll on the poor flower buds. Probably grown in a tunnel in Holland and got the shock of its life when it arrived here. But you never know, it might be ok. It's called C.x superba 'Red Joy'.

When I first saw this plant, waaayyyy back in 1966, when I moved up here with my family from London, I'd never seen anything like it before! They were growing up the front walls of some houses opposite the cemetery. Even now, more than 50 years later, one or two still survive.

My daughter has one in her back garden with very dark red flowers. But hers is left to its own devises & has formed a low bush. I helped rescue it from a bullying Hebe about 10 years ago. Both are doing fine & in fact the Hebe is now suffering from the bullying! ?

Lovely Dd - these are great, aren’t they. I’ve just bought a white one, Chaenomeles Yukigoten for the front fence.

Beautiful - are they always this early?

I planted Chaenomeles Superba Pink Lady last year, in bud so fingers crossed.

Just today I discovered a whole array of these beautiful plants that were newly planted last year in a new housing development not far from our flat. I hadn't walked around it in some months so did so today. These would have been planted by the developers of the site I imagine as they weren't actually in anybody's garden. ? They were all white & the first flowers were just starting to open. I thought I must remember to go back that way in a couple of weeks time when they should be open in all their glory!?

Balcony you must go back and take a photo....re your daughter's plant, they do need pruning to keep them under control, my Oh usually does ours, otherwise it would be in next doors garden!
Amy buy large established ones, we have one with bright red flowers and it is so slow!! must check to see it hasn't got a collar on??

Stera this has been out for about a fortnight now!it varies depending on the winter here, has been known to flower late January!!
