yumm. You beat me Amy, lol. Mine are just starting to turn. Let me know how you like it. They are quite popular over here - perfect size for anything.

I have Moneymaker this year too. My neighbour always grows them from seed and he gave me some. I haven’t tried them just yet. But the stripey ones I grew taste really poor! I’m giving up growing tomatoes unless the other two varieties taste better.

I say this every year, but this year I mean it! :)

lol... my first thought was: "I can just smell that lovely tomatoey smell...mmmmm!" Amy's having us all to tea!
I swore off tomatoes earlier this year, too, Karen. But a trip to the nursery later in spring changed my mind... why not just a couple of plants? they looked like they needed someone to coddle them.
I chose the old fave beefsteak and a new low acid one...no variety name come to mind though. Have had to carry water for them.
I also bought a musk melon at the local plant sale. The melon and the tomatoes are liking the heat but need constant watering.

For me, summer wouldn't be right without fresh tomatoes to eat.

Everything else I grow tastes better fresh Bathgate...except the toms. The supermarket ones are definitely better so far! There was one I grew...a cherry called Rosella I think...it was really good. But apart from that...they have all been pretty Meh.

Sorry about that. I've found several that I enjoy very much including this one. My plants will produce heavily well into October. I won't even consider the ones at the market.

Well, I have this one, so I’m looking forward to tasting it. I do have some ripe, but I will leave them on the plants till after tomorrow’s open day. :)

I just ate one now for breakfast. It's 9:30 Sunday Morning. Not bad at all.

Mine are coming thick and fast, I grow old favourites like money maker, there is nothing like home grown tomatoes, the smell and taste ummmm, cucumbers in abundance now too.

12 Aug, 2018

I agree, nothing like fresh tomato & cucumber salad.

I didn't grow any toms this year but I sowed spinach & spring onions in the trough that the toms were in last year, very satisfactory, fresh greens going on & on, but you have to like spinach & the onions have done ok too.

15 Aug, 2018

Spring onions home grown are much nicer than shop one Ff much tastier and hotter , I love my vegetables all except Spinach Why ? I don't know theres something a bit slimy about it Lol ...

15 Aug, 2018

Yes, you're right , it is slimy, but it slips down easy,😀. I just think of all the nutrients in it & hope it will make me strong like Pop-eye!

16 Aug, 2018

Lol .. I like that Ff You'll have to show us your muscles one day :o))

Lori you mention a new low acid one? being as I cannot eat tomatoes because of the acid I would be very interested to know the name, because I love home grown toms, and really miss not eating on from the vine....
Amy it looks so delicious, I have tomato envy!!

Dd2: I'll get you some seed. and I'll talk to the grower I bought the plant from. My hub has the same problem. Probably won't be hard to find online, though.

What lovely friendly people we have on GOY always ready to help :o)

Something I found that I think will interest Dd2: from a site called tomatoculture:
" The results are interesting for the “low acid for health reasons” question as well.

Summary points from the studies:

The public has been told repeatedly that the lighter colored yellow and orange tomatoes, as well as the small-fruited and newer varieties, are lower in acid than traditional, red tomatoes.
The data showed that the lighter colored and smaller tomato varieties were actually higher in acid than standard red tomato varieties. Newer varieties were not less acidic either.
The mean pH among tested varieties ranged within a narrow band, between 4.14 (most acidic) and 4.68 (least acidic). The danger threshold for botulism is 4.8.
There were higher pH outliers but these anomalies were attributed to growing location or those tomatoes being over ripe.
It is likely that yellow and orange tomato varieties were assumed to be lower in acid due to a higher sugar content (these types tend to be sweeter than traditional red tomatoes), which masks the acidity.
In conclusion, all tomatoes are acidic. Sweeter tomatoes may taste less acidic, but there really are no low acid tomatoes."

So there we have it...Boohoo... the big shrug, and it all comes down to the culture of the individual plant..??? I sympathise with all tomato lovers who can't take the acidity. My mom often served me sliced tomatoes with sugar instead of salt... one acid counteracts another?..I don't know. as a kid I lapped it up! sugar on veggies...wow.

Thank you for that info, Lori. I also have to go to go easy on eating toms because of the acidity, but ok if I don't over indulge ( difficult if you grow your own)!

17 Aug, 2018

Thank you so much Lori.....I really miss not being able to eat toms......I even love the smell of them, and there is no other substitute when cooking with them, what with no onions and garlic....its such a pain....food so bland!

20 Aug, 2018

I know what you mean DD2 and Feverfew: I love garlic but find that it's onions that cause me discomfort. I try to use only a tiny bit of it and use baking soda to cut the acid when I make homemade tomato soup but that increases the sodium content..bah! Started growing a few culinary herbs to help with reduced salt and flavour issues. I love the aroma of basil but use a lot of oregano because it is less powerful. It gives a lovely flavour and aroma. Thyme as well. I have my own grown stuff dried in jars... and when I cook it's like conjuring..."bubble, bubble, toil and trouble! " lol....

Have you ever tried the low acid tomatoes. Here's an article about tomatoes for people with low acid tolerance.
