Red Gladiolous

Aleyna

By Aleyna

Red Gladiolous (Gladiolus)

We planted podocarpus along the front fence, but they are still young. For this reason there is a space between them, until they reach the final wingspan. We decided to plant gladiolous to fill the spaces. We were delighted with the beauty of the flowers. When flowering is past, we will remove the bulbs and sort them by color to plant massifs(not sure about this translation, I mean same flower colors in the same place) next spring.

Thank you Balcony :)
Now is almost time to save the seeds. I confess I never thought it could be done. LOTS to learn phewww!

Remember that Gladioli are hybrids & that the flowers you eventfully get from your own seeds will not come true to colour. So even if you save seeds from this red one your seedlings will be all different colours - including some red ones.

If you want the same colour ones you have at present you would need to lift the plants as the foliage dies back & collect the tiny bulbils that form around the base of the corm. Just remember to back them up & label them with the name of the plant or its colour so you don't get them mixed up later! Some Gladioli produce 100s of tiny, almost seed size, bulbils! Anyway, even the biggest will need a couple of years to reach flowering size.

Hummm, I'm a bit a lazy one. Will save the bulbils and let them grown in a rich soil for as time as they need. And buy new ones to plant next year ... :)

If you leave them in situ you will get big clumps which will give you more flowers over a few years but will eventually need to be lifted & separated before replanting some of them again.

Hummm, I have 2 of each color, so I'll take one and leave the other one in situ, to see what happen.
