Gladiolus

Gladiolus

How long do Gladiolus bulbs thrive in the ground? I ask because this peachy colour one has not been flowering for some years!

They never last long in my garden Shirley, sometimes just one year, but the seeds spread around and com e up in places where I don't want them.
That one's a pretty colour.

Hywel, that' just what seems to be happening with mine! What I should really do is put all the Gladiolii together when they have finished flowering. Will I remember to do that ... doubt it!

HA ! You're as bad as me Shirley :D but there's so much to do and that's what the problem is.

We can only do so much gardening in a day!

And the older we get the less we can do ... well that's true for me anyway :D

Sandra, I am beginning to think these Gladdies were part of a GW mag. Summer bulbs offer about ten years ago! Maybe it would be best to dig them up soon, that way I can put them together before the foliage dies down ...

I bought a load of gladioli bulbs online during lockdown but I understand I shouldn't plant them until early spring. Trouble is despite keeping them cool and dry (as much as possible ) I noticed they have begun sprouting.
This one of yours Shirley is a beautiful colour. I hope it continues to bloom for you.

Lovely colour in that Gladiolus! I have a few on the balcony that come up every year & when I shared an allotment with Gerry he had 100s which he grew for cut flowers! They came back every year the 4 years I was helping him! I'm sure he planted them some years earlier, before I started to help him.

Yet in the spring I bought a box of 20 & not a single one has flowered! :(

Thanks Waddy, I'm not sure how to deal with bulbs that are already sprouting! Plant them in pots and keep them in a cool, dark place perhaps?

David, I seem to remember photos of the Gladdies on the allotment ... :o)

I've got them in a net under the bench in the garage Shirley, so cool and dark. I just hope they don't sprout too much!

Yes, it was, but has finished flowering now. That's the trouble, they flower for such a short time ...
