Late summer garden

Janey

Late summer garden (Malus angustifolia (Southern Crab)

We have sun this afternoon, which makes it feel more like late summer than early autumn...:))
Butterball Malus is beginning to colour up. I've promised it to my daughter as I haven't room for it here and it does need to be in the ground..

A really charming area of your garden, Janey. Love the mix of green planting and pretty colourful flowers. Looks a nice and private area to sit and enjoy a drink or 2..

I do like the table and chairs much better Sheila after I painted them in ebony, I remember your garden seat..
I'm happy for Katherine to have the little tree, and it's struggling in the tub. We'll plant it during winter...X

Such a lovely Crab apple ... just what I am looking for! Yellow fruits so colour blind OH sees them better than the red or deep purple ones. Been away for a few days so will reply to your PM soon ... :o)

Hi Shirley, it would be a fabulous tree planted in the garden, you will love having one, fabulous flowers in spring then these peachy/gold baubles for winter, blackbirds love them! Hope you enjoyed your few days away..:))

It is a wooden barrel Sandra, dropping to bits really! Yes, we've had a fabulous day today haven't we, in fact I put another coat of ronseal on the table and chairs!

Thanks Balc, your balcony will be loving this sun..:))

Janey, the two varieties we have looked for are 'Butterball' or 'Golden Hornet' without success so far. Visited an arboretum this morning, a long row of Malus but all with red or plum colour fruits so came home with no tree.

PM just sent ... :o)

Ooh, I'll have a read Shirley..:))

Really, that's a shame. i did have Red Sentinel which had fabulous fruits, but gave that to a friend a few years ago.
Both crab apples were from Morrisons about 10 years ago..

The ones we have seen are anything from £40 to £50 ... :o(

Goodness, they are crab apples, lovely but hardly rare!

15 Sep, 2020

I am reluctant to buy one on-line, even though some suppliers have them cheaper, as I like to see what I'm paying for!

I agree Shirley especially as the prices are high.
I always wished I'd planted a prunus autumnalis. very pretty open shape with snow flake flowers late autumn and over winter. I helped Mum plant one in her front garden and it always looked stunning..

Well, I have! The barrel is past repair, but I do have a lovely large green stone pot....which will await my baby Liquidambar when it's big enough. I'll look forward to the beautiful colours you enjoy Amy with yours. Till then, I'll plant the pot with anything for a couple of years...:))

For two days running, the Hummingbird Hawkmoth was busy in the garden. It was so good to see it..x

That sound perfect Janey I can't wait to see your L Amber in situation the colours will look perfect against your lovely old walls , Your hummingbird likes all your scents and flowers I wonder if it will look for a winter home I don't know anything about their life styles ..

I haven't seen a Hummingbird Hawkmoth on the balcony this year but I have seen them other years feeding from my Geraniums.

The first time I ever saw one was when we lived in Cuenca, many, many years ago. That too drank from my Geraniums that I had on our balcony railings. I watched it several evenings while sitting outside as the day began to cool down & the sun was setting.
