I could hear tapping and it was 3 blackbirds at the kitchen window sill. The female is one of our breeding pairs. They were at the food before I even shut the door.
Pond was ice free yesterday.

I’ve noticed a sudden influx of blackies to the garden, Eileen. I wondered where they’d all gone! Now they are munching on berries and attempting awkward leaps on to hanging feeders. I’ve put some bits out for them on the bund steps.

round here they go off into the surrounding fields mid October and re appear late Nov early December. There were 8 at once this morning. I suspect some were this years offspring. my mother blacking who is 4 yrs old was one of the ones at the window this morning. Its nice to see her still fit and healthy.
The sparrowhawk took a hedge sparrow this morning and a dead mouse we had noticed below one of the feeders. The various tits were not amused and ganged up on her and chased her off. poor girl she needs to eat too.

Yes, our blackies, wagtails, goldies are out in force too. Feeding a lot of woodies and a family of magpies also. I haven't seen the sparrowhawk recently. The leftover catfood disappears immediately. Great shot, SBG.

Yes the birds are hungry and I always make sure that they have fresh water too as it gets frozen in a solid block with the night time temperature. Minus four this morning. Well done for feeding the birds, they are obviously used to you.

-4 here too and it didn't get above 0 all day. to top it off our boiler has gone on the blink so we have no central heating. Thank fully we have an open fire.
I have to defrost the water dishes too and the pond is frozen over again.

I hope you get your boiler fixed quickly Seaburngirl. I remember as a child, we had no central heating and there was a frosty cover on the inside of the windows. Lots of blankets kept us warm. As you say at least you have an open fire to help. Good luck with the repairs.

they are due back this morning it hasn't been a straight forward swapping of boilers. original one used 15mm pipes this new one uses 25mm pipe so a lot of ground work first. We kept their tools here overnight to save them time and also they have to come back here first before going on to other jobs! [is that sneaky of us?].
I used to love the frost patterns on the windows but not the bare feet on the lino. Why was it you could never find the rug where you thought it was when you climbed into bed?

The garden birds are such a joy and really need us at the moment.
