Caterpillar.

Unfortunately I disturbed many of these little fellows yesterday when I was rejigging the side border. I managed to move all of them to safety, away from my hosta!

Rose, I do hope not! Fingers crossed 🤞 there were so many! To be honest, I think I could’ve placed them further away!

Thanks Julia! Just hoping they’ve found the passage to next doors veg!
Crikey, it sounds like they’ve started causing you some problems!

what plants were they feeding on Kate?
may not eat your hosta depending on what they are. Need to id this to satisfy my curiosity.

They are magpie moth caterpillars. According to the Butterfly/moth conservation they feed on the following:

Currant and gooseberry bushes (Ribes spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), Hazel (Corylus avellana), Garden Privet (Ligustrun ovalifolium), Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) and Bramble (Rubus fruiticosus)

so your hosta is safe.

Thank you, Eileen! That’s fab info. They were on the variegated euonymus! I’d lollipped the shrub yesterday and discovered I’d disturbed so many of these caterpillars!
Thanks again for the I.D. They are very attractive little creatures.

Glad you were kind to the caterpillars Kate. We are low on the butterflies and moths.

It’s difficult isn’t it! I didn’t want to toss them to high heaven! But I was keen to remove them, safely! Discreetly, I nudged them over to one of the neighbours 😉
