The central part of this row of cottages is the only Medieval house left in Shaftesbury which was founded around 888 by King Alfred. He founded an Abbey here and put his daughter Aethelgifu in charge of it. Only Women, and it became extremely powerful and owned land for many miles around. Until Henry VIII of course. The Town dwindled in that time and there was a lot of plague and disease and poverty. So the Medieval houses fell into disrepair and were demolished. Most of the older buildings are now from the Georgian period.

Thank you Shirley. I have learned never to say ‘for ever home’ again, but I hope so too! X
