The other side!

The other side!

Absolutely the stickiest, heaviest clay I’ve ever come across. Well…not quite true. It’s exactly like a part of my last garden where substrate had been imported instead of topsoil. But here it’s the whole garden! Eugh! Going to need a landscaper this time!

That does look like a huge challenge. Do let us know what happens next.

I remember an earlier garden of ours in Cumbernauld being like that! We have clay here so know the challenges. I'm sure you'll quickly knock it into shape - raised beds??

Possibly Ange, but I am a little worried about droit. It gets very hot here in the summer.

I have clay here Karen but over the last 5 years since being here have put lots and lots of compost in and everything is thriving now.
It looks like it's going to be a big job!

Getting a landscaper sounds a good plan … will you do the design yourself? Dare I recommend an S-shaped path and a pergola for shade … have fun whatever you decide 🙂.

Karen, that brick wall looks superb. Which way does it face please? I spy a tree on the other side!

I'm loving your wall too! I love a brick wall, we have one, albeit much lower!!!!
A landscaper may be the way to go! You don't want to be overdoing it as you're recovering still..
My parents in Scotland have very clay heavy soil in the back. I'm sure you'll have a plan to move forward with your garden. Looking forward to seeing the progress!

Karen, I understand your concern re. drought. We have soil that looks like yours all winter and concrete lookalike all summer!

Thanks everyone. I have a courtyard design in mind. I’ll put up a photo of my drawing. We will need to see whether we can actually afford it though!

Shirley, there’s a compass on my drawing. I’ll post it. Basically the garden faces East..ish. So the wall has its north side in my garden.

Karen, I'm sure you will research what you can grow next to or against the wall. Hopefully you have sunshine this morning ... as we do here in Sussex ... :o)
