This is a very ornamental palm native to the deep, hot humid tropics. It doesn’t grow very welloutdoors here in San Diego, even though some people in the Palm Society do grow them successfully outdoors here. Photo taken September 25, 2024.

Licuala species palms are considered by many palm experts as the most beautiful palms in the world.

Hard to grow here in Townsville, but very common in the rainforest areas up north. Such a lovely palm.

Bushbernie,
I’ve read it’s not an easy palm to grow here. It wants a very sheltered position, out of sun and any drying winds, also it doesn’t like temps below 40 degrees f. (4.4 degrees c), except for the shortest duration of time.
I hope I don’t kill it!
I had a beautiful Licuala peltata ‘Sumawongii’ for 5 years. It did well until I kept it in the house for a full year. It got completely infested with bugs and scale and killed it.
Here it is from 2012.

What a shame you lost that Licuala peltata! Let's hope your grandis does well for a very long time. I had one growing outdoors here but a nasty cyclone stripped away all the shelter above it and it was left out in full sun. It didn't last long after that.

That’s terrible about your Licuala grandis!😞.
I know it would grow much better and faster in the tropics where you live. The one thing in tropical or subtropical climates is it must have very filtered sun. My little L. grandis will definitely stay in a pot. I may plant one of my Licuala peltata ‘Sumawongii’ and L. spinosa in a shady spot in the ground, as I have two of each.

You're nudging me to think about getting another Licuala and this time perhaps keeping it in my shadehouse garden.

That would be wise. It grows slowly, so it won’t grow big very fast.
