Dahlia "Lavender Perfection"

Dahlia Lavender Perfection" is the only Dahlia that I have left out of 12. I've lost them along the way, always over winter. They're pretty picky about how they're kept over winter. I don't have a basement so that makes it even harder for me. But that's ok. I'm trying to thin out plants that I have to dig in the fall. My poor back can't handle Dahlias any longer.

Oh that's too bad... this looks very familiar, except the one I have was not named; it came in a variety pack...with pompons, cactus and dinnerplate dahlias...Nice to have a name to put to my dahlia... have no choice~ decided I must have dahlias...ergo...must dig...just hope the back holds out!!

I have to fight with myself every spring Lori, when the new catalogs come out. I really love them. The Canna and Elephant Ears are much easier to dig and overwinter, so the won out over Dahlias.

Oh Yes... I saw a pic of the Elephant Ears in the plant catalogue...crazy prices for a 6" pot or was that for a root? I wonder if they will live as a house plant over the winter? I really, really want to try them!!

Oh Lori, You'll just HAVE to get an Elephant Ear. They are really SO easy, in my opinion. The first few years I had mine I left it in the pot (a huge pot that took 2 to carry) and put it in a nice, sunny window for the winter. The second winter it bloomed for me !!! So yes, you can keep them as a house plant but they really should have a large pot. The root system is tremendous. I have so many other large potted tropicals now that I felt it much easier to just store the EE bulb in peat for the winter (it is a huge bulb) in the cold feed closet. I havn't seen another bloom since that one winter it was in the pot. It probably needs more time than just spring till fall for it to flower.
Let me know if you have trouble finding a cheap bulb. We can get them here in places like Wal-Mart for about $5 a bulb. I have so many bulbs that I usually trade some each spring at the plant trade. I can send you one if you want. Let me know.
