What variety of banana is this?

Hi Delonix, I was going bananas trying to find out this variety..LOL, it's the Gros Michel variety, when still green it can be boiled and eaten otherwise it's edible when it is ripe.
I just did a read up on the net that we have over 50 species of bananas in Fiji, something new I've learnt on bananas today!!LOL

Thanks for the information. Gros Michel is an old variety that's a good eating banana. I think it used to be commercially grown in Central America.

Do you mean actual species or varieties?

Here in California I'm sure it's more than 100 varieties...no proof...However, The California Rare Fruit Society has been around since around 1965. They have been very active in introducing rare fruits from all around the World.

Gros Michel is a banana species, is what I should have mentioned:-) I have learnt a lot more about bananas in these few days, thanks to you!!LOL

'Gros Michel' is a banana variety not species. This is botanically the correct way it should be listed: Genus: Musa; species: paradisiaca; variety: 'Gros Michel'. (Musa paradisiaca 'Gros Michel')
