Indoor Azalia

Janey

By Janey

Indoor Azalia (Rhododendron ponticum (Azalia))

I bought this Azalia before Xmas for £1.50 and it has bloomed so well....all the leaves have dropped off though. Think I'll put it in the garden in a few weeks time.

Pretty colour, the leaves on mine have started to fall I thought it might have been just a bit to hot in my kitchen for it,so I,ve moved it on the the landing where its a bit cooler to see what happens...

Pretty pretty. I wish azaleas did better indoors in my home. They look so gorgeous in the shops (fresh from an ideal climate in the greenhouses of Holland!).

If there is one thing I really miss, living where I do, it is acid soil. Having grown up in New England (Connecticut) and then spent some years in the Washington/Philadelphia area, I miss all those plants which grow there so freely. In New England it would be the mountain laurel (and the maples, of COURSE!), and further south the azaleas and rhododendrons, which - there - you can just plant! Here you must prepare a special bed for them into which no (alkaline) ground water must seep. It's costly and not always successful. I also miss dogwoods (cornus something) and am thoroughly annoyed when I see them on offer at my garden center, as IF they had a chance to flourish in our soil! And I miss the "little things" which grow wild (still, I hope!) in New England, such as trailing arbutus, lady slipper, and Dutchmen's Breeches!

That's really interesting Nancy.........we had Ladies Slipper growing on our hillside in Spain and minute spanish daffodils...in November, the tall ericas clothes the whole area in pink. I've heard of Dutchmens breeches...are they some form of lily?

Lady Janey - Thank you for providing this picture of a fly. Do you know what variety it is? You really ought to have zoomed in to stop that cheap pink thing dominating the picture. Why was the azalea so cheap btw? Was it because the leaves were about to drop off or because nobody would buy it or both? I agree with Amy that it was money well spent. It was worth it even if it was just for this very well taken beautiful photo that has been appreciated by so many members.

I've put the Azalia now in the greenhouse...it's still flowering though....shall plant it out when a bit milder.
