I planted this in September 2007, Angie. It had two flowers last year - more this!

Ah, lovely Wisley Cream. You put your comment under my latest photo of the same plant, so I came looking for yours !
This clematis does take a few years to really get going and produce lots of flowers.
Which two other C. cirrhosas do you have ?

C. cirrhosa 'Lansdowne Gem' and, naturally, 'Freckles'. He has been flowering his socks off for ages, with plenty of buds still to come!

That sounds like an interesting trio of C. cirrhosa :o)

think i am going to give C. 'freckles another go, i have found a patch of soil that tested dark green!...yep alkaline! and it just so happens this is where i have plans to put an obliesk. quite sunny though, do you think it will do well?

My C. cirrhosa Wisley Cream did better once it got tall which meant more sunshine on it. Don't know if that helps !

Yes, I should think so. They aren't too vigorous, and they are evergreen. Beware of one called 'Jingle Bells' as I have heard that it isn't hardy.

Do you prefer plain cream, cream with red sprinkles inside, or plain dark red inside?

I know you said 'Freckles' but I just wondered!

I've never had any luck growing clematis of any sort. Maybe my soil is too heavy and wet. I've tried several times and they last a year or so but then just disappear. What am I doing wrong?

Oh I do love this Clematis Spritz. I wonder how hardy it is?? Don't know if it would survive my winters.

Gee, I have to be careful with Clematis as most types get wilt in my garden for some reason. The Type A's do the best although I don't know why. With the wilt they will do OK for a while and then suddenly die back to the ground, never to be seen again. :o(

Gilli, I don't think that the c.cirrhosas would like your cold weather. They are only hardy down to -5 degrees, although all three of mine have come through -8 that we had earlier this month.

Gee - maybe they are in the wrong position? They like feet in shade and heads in the sun. They need to be fed regularly as well, and enjoy manure dug in on planting - which should be deep. Any help?

What a shame Spritz. I would have liked to grow this clematis. Oh well, I'll just have to drool over your pictures. :o)

I've heard the same ...feet in shade, head in sun!! There are clemmies who will survive and thrive with our cold season, Gilli.... check out the specie. Mikec has a pic (number 891, if you want to check out his pic) of an autumn bloomer that has white flowers similar to Spritz's pic above...will have to check out the var...but it grows very fast and will cover an arbour very quickly... and is dormant through our frigid winters. It is Clematis ternifolia..and it's fragrant!!
