How loverly, I dont think I've ever seen one on the ground before, where are all his friends?

26 Jan, 2009

Thanks Eileen - no not often on the ground Dawn as stuck like glue to those niger feeders, come hail wind and snow ! Started with one feeder for a pair then more and more arrived stopped at 3 feeders as cost a fortune to feed !

Oh regarding holes in your pond bank , Dawn if water voles very lucky as becoming rare - ? kingfisher will also make entrance holes like this.

You made me smile when you said the wind can blow like mad and swing the niger feeders around but the gold finches stay put! I must get some niger seed and feeder. I make porridge in the morning now for the ground feeding birds and I stir some seeds and sultanas in too, it always get eaten by lunchtime. I never see movement from the holes - this is where the remote camera would come in useful/ We made a tunnel from a pipe and put in the bank of the brook and it seems to have been disturbed but dont want to go near it in case the king fisher is around.

Apparently Dawn Kingfishers pooh before entering tunnel - kinda makes sense as dont want to be excavating that as well whilst digging ! Think Id make sure I nipped to the loo first if I were a miner .... So their sites can be identified by bird pooh !

Quite amazing to see these tough little birds hang on during snow and wind as feeders swinging wildly.Suppose they used to this when trying to feed off thislte seed in the wild.

Brilliant, thanks BB, I'll go pooh hunting tomorrow then, lol. Clever, arent they, ha ha. A pair of mallards have been on the pond when I go up in the mornings these last few days, hope they nest this year. Dont hang around long though when they see me and the dog.
