These have become so common in the US, that we nicknamed them "parking lot" birds. They sit in the parking lots and hide under cars for shelter and scavenge any food dropped. They were introduced to New York I believe in the 1800's along with the Starling and now both can be found all across the country and Canada.

Still common here Wohlibuli but numbers have dropped by 50% primarily due to modern building trends with open plan gardens fewer hedges and low maintenance designs.
Sad when visiting these new developments - hardly see a bird in them.
We got your grey squirrel so only fair you get some starlings in return ! Dont mind either but accept they can reach severe nuisance levels at times.

What a perfect photo - SHE's lovely - I think its a girl? I remember years ago they were always amongst hedges, chirping away - are your sparrow flats occupied yet BB?
26 Jan, 2009
Oh BB, It is so strange how nature ( and man) works. Some guy decided that N.Am had to have all the birds that Shakespeare mentions in his writings. Sparrows and Starlings decided they really liked it! I understand that a lot of places are having problems with introduced species. You have my sympathy, the Grey Squirrel is a real pest!

That is gorgeous................

Great photo ....
26 Jan, 2009
Thank you - not a pest to me Wohlibuhli but has caused problems here .
The history of its introduction here is really fascinating and not the animals fault. It is classified in similar terms to a rat and think thats unfair.
Gets blamed for allsorts as regarded as a pest. Its all relative isnt it ? Would you believe there are efforts here to introduce the beaver ?
Sure many of your compatriots would think that to be madness.

I love this photo, BB! Jane or Ray's pic??
26 Jan, 2009
Credit where its due Spritz it is rather good isnt it ? I cannot tell a lie and have to confess ... its one of mine ! BB
26 Jan, 2009
WELL DONE Ray - it's just great - I could have sworn it was Jane... LOL.
26 Jan, 2009
She gets all the credit - and so she should as a lot more patience than me. Occasionally manage to get the camera off her though ! About as often as I now get on here.lol
26 Jan, 2009
Trust me BB if you saw the damage a beaver can do, you would not want Beavers.
27 Jan, 2009
Great close-up! Like Wohlibuli says I see these in the parking lot all the time, never heard of them referred to as 'parking lot' birds though.
27 Jan, 2009
Wow. Fantastic shot BB
27 Jan, 2009
Thats a great close up..........
27 Jan, 2009
Lol...., I love this pic ! With the way it's head is tiltled and looking up at the camera, it looks like this little birdie has alot of attitude...lol. Looks like he's thinking, "Go ahead, make my day".....He hee he.

Thank you - Asked to see a beavers lodge when out in Can / US the locals actually refused asking was I mad ? ( wasnt using my tag then ) what on earth did I want to see those ' varmints ' for ?
I ve made his day Flower by providing purpose built apartments for them - they used to be so common here and rather sad numbers dropping rapidly.
Well in most places ... they thrive here. :- )

another cracking shot.did anyone see that program on swarms the other day.in rome the starlings gather before they migrate i think.they are getting more and more every year.they looked realy amazing in a massive flock.almost like a liquid.when they roost together they drop 6-7 tons of poo a night.you should of sean the cars lol.

did you know starlings are in the crow family and are one of the best talking birds if your that way inclined you can get
10 Feb, 2009
I like the starlings here and love their way of chatting amongst themselves all the time..lol..and yes this bird is very much a part of our environment here as well...great shot of it...sweet thing...looking very happy with it's food find....
10 Feb, 2009

Thank you for kind comments - yes NP seen those pics in Rome a few times as much as I love birds wouldnt want 5million of them roosing over me ! Those ariel displays where they dance and turn in the most amazing shapes is fantastic - pity they have to land !
A friend rescues birds and animals - she has a one legged one winged 17 year old starling who chats mimics the phone and computer...

brilliant bonkers us humans are horrible realy.theres a place wear they breed pheasants just so rich people can be the big game hunters killing tame birds.on this road near there one day we couldnt believe how many road kills there were.we went back the next day as slow as we could and i counted 83 and i must of mist some.disgracefull .thats mesmerising all them starlings.
10 Feb, 2009
I will never understand cruelty. Probably as well I dont have a friend like yours BB or our house would be full of rescued animals. 17 year old starling, that's amazing, do you remember miner birds, havent heard of anyone having one for ages, they are good talkers.
10 Feb, 2009
Disgusting Np...killing for killings sake, and as Dawn says..cant understand senseless cruelty.
Mynah birds, like you say Dawn..brilliant talkers although Mary our African Grey parrot would dispute that ! lol
10 Feb, 2009
miner birds have about 6 different sub species that go up to the size of chicken.there the crow family .they are very rare now i believe .all crows can talk .there opertunists like us,rats.tommy rook.all opertunist animals are clever because they have to be bye nature.the best talking bird bye far is a liar bird (excuse my spelling) if you look on utube under liar bird talking it will blow you away honest.i dont think miner birds breed very well either .back then no one cared when they were every wear i in the 70`s ish.they used to sell terrapins then with a stupid little tank that was smaller than there full size.no wonder they out grew there inviroment and ended up in the wild.i watched a program on tv about intelgence in animals.this shows how bright the crow family are.they set up a full size room with various furniture draws etc.they also had an identical room proportionaly just shoe box size ish.they showed a raven or a large crow and a chimpanzee a miniture treat in the little room and then hid it.they then put a real treat in the same place in the big room.the chimp was a bit stumped though it found it.the crow ran strate in to the right place.are we the cleverest i ask myself.it is true bye the way elephants have amazing memories. im full of useless information lol
10 Feb, 2009
No Np..not useless info...got onte for you.Did you see the programme about the crows and road kill ? Apparently they are so clever that when needing to get to raod kill to eat,and when near traffic lights, they know to wait till the lights change to red for stop...then go in to eat, knowing it is safe to be on the road.! Clever !
10 Feb, 2009
thanx no i didnt see that but i sore some crows in another country putting nuts they couldnt break the shell of on the road at the lights so the traffic would crack them
11 Feb, 2009
Yes...saw that one too Np...so clever and resourseful....could learn a lot from them..lol
11 Feb, 2009
BB/NP: Totally agree with all your comments and I am proud to share your thoughts. I would love an African Grey BB.!
11 Feb, 2009
we could learn a lot from nature as it goes but none so blind as thoughs who will not see.i believe dawn if you want them tame you get them from little chics and hand rear them for best results.there are 2 different sorts.theres not much difference apart from ones smaller more pidgeon size and the reds not so bright.the one you normaly get is the bigger one.i dont mind sharing my knowledge.if not ill waste it and take it to my grave and that would be a waste lol
11 Feb, 2009
HI NP, thanks for the info. Noooo, dont take your knowledge to the grave, wud just be wasted
11 Feb, 2009
