Aww, thanks for posting this BB. Gone to my fav's! What a lovely photo, I appreciate how difficult they are to photograph. I've been putting meal worms around in crevices today, just hope she finds them. I've tried to put them where I've seen her around. Going to get John to built me some robin and wren boxes tomorrow!! The lovely book we both share says they both like the open fronted boxes.

8 Feb, 2009

Sure she will find them Dawn, and the bigger birds wont even know they are there.!lol Great idea to make those boxes for robins and wrens...and will cost a fraction of the shop bought ones.Keep up the good work John !

I'll give John a pat on the back BB. I know you've said before they like the boxes quite low down in dense vegetation, so need to select a good spot for them. I do hope the wrens and robins find the meal worms, I suppose once they do, they will return which is what I want so they will be so helpful to them if they do nest.

Dont forget to take some pics when youve sited them Dawn !

What a poser ! Excellent shot . I also love that fern in the foreground, apparantly an evergreen variety, do you happen to know the cultivar ? I'm getting jealous again...lol

Thank you all - did I say nice and sunny yesterday that ll teach me !
Thick layer of snow over - night and birds tapping at windows for food this morning.

Our porch has a plastic roof ( brrr ) and rooks stamping about on it from about 6.30am , no lie ins here.

Well Flc suggest you make yourself a coffee as I relate this to you ...
first and foremost I ve seen your beautiful garden and cant believe theres anything in mine to make you jealous.! much more likely to be other way round .

The fern of course has a great long latin name but I know it as a Christmas fern does die back a little in Spring but as name suggests at its best over winter months and generally considered an evergreen.

Probably should pm you with details but just like to share this coincidence.

I typed in Christmas fern in search engine to ensure I had right plant and you ll never guess what popped up !

A place advertising Christmas ferns for sale is less than 50 miles from you in Marion NC.Take interstate 40 west to Marion a place called Meadowbrook Nursery Tel: 828-738-8300 www.we-du.com sells a 6" plant for $10 .Can you believe that - the wonders of computers that I can sit in frozen Yorkshire and end giving directions to something on your doorstep !

Can you imagine if you go there and tell the owner a friend in England sent me .lol

The plant growing through the rocks is Lysmachia also known as Creeping Jenny so that appropriate for Jenny wren ...

No lie ins here either BB. My cat Jess comes upstairs and meows at around 6.30am each day and you know those springy door stops that fix to the skirting board, well Bonnie doyngs that with her paw, in the kitchen as if to say GET UP. Good find for FlC. I love ferns, the ones I have are just native, wild, common ones they appears at their own free will along shaded parts of the brook, very nice. Yes, I will take pics when the boxes are made and sited.

LOL Dawn iv Visions of Your Jess Donging The Door Stop lol :D

9 Feb, 2009

Ha ha, he hee Jacque, its the dog that donges the door stop, lol. This is while the cat is meowing in the bedroom. Bliss, oh and the birds are singing as if to say, get my porridge!!!!

9 Feb, 2009

Same here..no lie in even at weekend.!Birds expecy their food at 7 30 prompt. If not find them looking accusingly in the windows shaking their tiny claws ! Fill all feeders early as they get iced up in this weather.Left sultanas out the other night in the jar and they were like little bullets !

Hardly seems the same garden today - more snow after rapid thaw thought it had gone ..

12 Feb, 2009

John is hopefully building my wren and robin boxes tomorrow :-))) I've found a tree in the corner covered with wild ivy so one can definitely go there - where would you suggest the wren boxes go BB?

12 Feb, 2009

Thanks TT : )
Dawn..only needs to be a couple of feet off ground. In any thick hedge cover you may have.Good luck to John !!

12 Feb, 2009

That's brilliant, thanks. I wouldnt have thought to put the box for the wren so low but obvious I suppose really when you think of their habits.
