First of the season's offspring.

First of the season's offspring.

Young slow-worm found under slab in garden. They've probably just left the compost bin. This one was about 4 to 5 inches long and not much more than 1/8" in diameter. It's great to know they have bred again but means I can't use the compost as I don't want to disturb them. I put this one back in the compost bin, out of harms way.

A favourite of mine but seen very rarely here. I'd love them to join me in my garden.

I am very lucky Gee. We have had slow-worms in the garden for a number of years. They reside in the compost bin and during the warm weather you can raise the lid of the bin and there's a good chance that you will see one or more slow-worms lying on top of the compost, enjoying the warmth. I've seen up to four at a time.

I'm surprised that you don't have them in your garden Jacque. They are not a snake, but a legless lizard. They, along with our three types of true snakes are a protected species. The babies are the colour you see, turning to a beautiful gold colour. As they get older the male changes to a greyish, silver colour and the female to a bronze/brown and is much better looking than the male (no change there then). they grow up to about twenty inches long and unlike snakes they have eyelids, as do the other lizards.

Do you have a compost bin our heap as that is where they are commonly seen. If you don't, try putting a small piece of carpet or corrugated tin sheet down somewhere in the sun. They love to get under things where they can get lots of warmth.
