Thank you both this little corner by apple tree only 6 inches square - amazing what you can shoe horn in...

Well done.

You know I like 'natural' BB, so lovely. Can I see ivy in the wall/fence to the right? Bet the birds love that.

27 Apr, 2009

Yes Dawn..the ivy covers the old stone wall separating us from the churchyard.Just keep it trimmed but not at moment ! Its home to 3 blackbird,1 wren and 2 sparrow nests,so leaving well alone !

A bird hotel then, lol. The birds sing beautifully first thing in the morning at the moment, dont they. I havent heard the cuckoo yet though, usually hear it around now.

what a lovely anemone, do you know which one?
we must have the same 'shoe-horn them in' gene!

28 Apr, 2009

Dawn, not heard a cuckoo around here, but mayhem amongst the blackbirds enough to cope with at moment.
Oh dear Seaburngirl....was hoping you wouldnt ask ! Lol. One of our finds at Reighton, and as you know, not always well labelled...but cheap ! Think it may be Nemerosa variety !

well it is still a jolly nice one. I would have looked for one next time i go to Reighton.

Still not heard the cuckoo BB, have you?

29 Apr, 2009

No Dawn....dont think many come this far north anyway. Please let us know when you do hear them, and your nesting birds beware ! Lol

Hmmm, I know, just been reading our lovely bird book and one of their favourite nests to hijack is the hedge sparrows - I really wouldnt want that :( To be honest, I've never heard them closeby - away in the fields behind us. One year we had one that could only sing Cook - there was no Hoo - so it was Cook, Cook, Cook, lol

LOL Dawn..remember the slogan for typhoo tea ! You cant have an oo with out typhoo.Maybe not...............!

I can remember BB, you are funny. On the tea theme, do you remember the PG Tips adverts with the chimps - "Dad, do you know the piano is on my foot"? Reply being, "You name it son and I'll play it"!!! Ha ha, the chimps were from Twycross Zoo which is just up the road from us, famous for their tea parties.

Hi Dawn...Jane again ! I read a book once telling of the history of Twycross Zoo.It started off as a small sanctuary owned by two elderly ladies didnt it ? Do you know what is going on with it now ? Are they still alive ? Am going back some years !

30 Apr, 2009

Hi Jane. Yes the zoo is thriving and a popular tourist attraction. I only know of one of the co-founders of the zoo - Molly Badham, she trained the chimps, she died recently at the age of 93. I believe she dedicated her life to caring fro them and training them with loving care ... what a star!

Oh thanks for that Dawn.Yes I remember now the name and she must have been in her 70s when she wrote her memoirs.Must research it as has brought back memories. Was very moved at the time of reading...especially as they looked after the babies in their home and dedicated a lifetime to their care.As you say... a star !

That's right Jane, I had forgotten they cared for the babies in their home. In fact, the zoo was built around their beautiful house which sits right in the middle of the zoo. They had their famous tea parties in the garden.

Lovely...thanks for all this detail Dawn.Fitting tribute to all their hard work and devotion ! : )
