It's not roots Cat. It looks like they come from buds just like flower buds. Although more appealing, Witch Hazel flowers are this sort of form. One thing for sure, I don't particularly like it either.

If it gets berries and the leaves are pretty..then it is ok...but Milky those flowers...oh dear...they don't look flowerish at all...I am sure they have their purpose tho....will be interesting to see what hppens next...!
