Wonderful bananas, do you eat them as veg or fruit ?.In the Caribbean they eat green bananas as veg and yellow as fruit

I always let me bananas ripens and eat them as a fruit. However, I was raised eating boiled green bananas, which I don't like very much.

My family has its roots in the Caribbean...even though my family has been in Hawaii since around 1900.

I had a lot of bananas last year...however, none have bloomed this year so far. I think my Mysore banana may be blooming soon though...then it takes 4 months for them to ripen. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait. : > )

wow thats ages...i didnt know bananas took that long to ripen. my tomatoes have just started to ripen. looks like we will get a huge crop this year...

Yes, even in the deep tropics it takes 3 months at least to ripen (ripe means bananas that are picked when light yellow-green). In San Diego if the plants bloom in late Summer or Fall it will take much longer to ripen depending on weather conditions.

Also, it takes the banana plant from the time it pops up from the ground 12 - 15 months or so to bloom. This is the reason why you should always allow at least 2 to 3 pups to grow at a time.

my dad worked on the docks where the banana boats came in. they used to hang them in ripening sheds. he used to bring us home green bananas and we would have to wait.....i think they use to take about six weeks after we got them..it used to feel like years...lol

Yes, once they are cut form the plant...they need 1 or 2 weeks to turn yellow. The reason why I don't have to wait as long is...I cut the banana stalks when the bananas are just slighly yellow/green. Most commercial banana stalks are cut while completely green.

Once you taste a home-grown bananas, you'll never want to buy store bought bananas again. : > )
