Glass house for the winter

the north seems to be getting blasted by a severe winter so i am being proactive with a glass house.
went on line and a local company is selling windows from quake damaged houses that had to be demolished.
initially they were $1 reserve and i got in early and for just $40 fo all the windows i needed as well i had to buy $40 worth of wood.
one of the doors i brought for $1 was cedar and saved me $120 worth of wood i would soon have to buy so a profit of $80 and a free glass house
the windows are now selling for $120 approx so i was really lucky to get in first befor the company got known around the city.
the last glass is on now and when the last pane went in i had to cut just 1/2 inch off it to fit so its my lucky day all round.
planting beans and silver beet (chard) so far

Very good buy and I love the finished result.
My big gh is made from 1/2 blocks topped with the kitchen and lounge windows that came out when the conservatory went up, and the door is the sliding one from the house.....all double glazed and for the last 20 years been a brilliant gh, double glazing seems to even out the temperatures
Its nice to think that some good came out of the awful disaster

Great recycling job Piersdad. Are you in the quake affected zone? Was your original gh quake damaged? We moan about our weather but fingers crossed we have been very fortunate in UK except in the flooded areas. The amount of and cost of refurbishing natural disaster affected property is quite frightening.

my old glass house of plastic and wood was tucked away behind the house and now has been made into a garden shed to store all sorts of things so it was a win win situation
hopefully it will give me greens all winter when the greens are expensive in the shops a trend i have been noticing lately ie cabbages are now twice the price and its the end of growing season when they should be cheaper so sticking to vegies the butterflies dont like

You did very well, PD, to get some much glass so cheaply! Now you will have a greenhouse that will last for many years & be so useful.
On the allotment the greenhouse Gerry & I have had a couple of pieces of glass knocked out by the wind. We already had a piece missing & unfortunately it was the side that the East wind was blowing against. Gerry discovered it before I did as I hadn't been down there for a whole week.
As he had a few sheets of glass at home he was able to put in one piece but there are still a couple missing. He has more glass but it needs cutting to size.
