Wind vs Wattles

We had a gale the other night. I went down the park the following mornig to discover that the poor wattle trees had not borne up too well.
Ever wondered what the bottom of a tree looks like?
This one fell into the pond!
Groundcover? No, just broken branches.
Our local reserve is very nice. Here is the pond…
Bottoms up! Here are a couple of wood ducks.
Jenni and Frances enjoy the park.
Other plant life.

J and F manage to poke their noses in everywhere, don't they? LOL!
It was very windy, Flori, of course I slept through it all [being one of those catatonic-of-a-night people] but there were lots of calls to the SES in the morning! The wattles seem to be the hardest hit.

Lovely pictures Pip but what a shame about the tree damage, nice to see that
F and J seem to be enjoying it all!

Looks too much like the Chilean mesquites after a monsoon storm here, but that's our own fault: watering too often and too shallowly. I'd be surprised if that's the problem there, Pip. Be careful cleaning up!

Thanks Annella, I think it is beuatiful too :o) Sadly, the trees, probably won't be replaced, but there are lots of young trees planted around the park as part of a regeneration programme.
Pam: Wood ducks are a breed of duck native to Australia. They are not actually wooden ;o)
Thanks Sixpence, it is a shame about the lovely wattles, they are all in bloom at the moment and there are lots of sunny yellow splashes around the bush. Bring on summer!
Thanks Pansy, the dogs are always having fun at the park! Except if it rains, lol
Tugbrethil: It is probably not the problem!

o wot a shame bt the trees must have bin 1 hell of a gale. were is it that u live pip.
13 Aug, 2010
you have a great park there Pip - lovely for the dogs =)) I didn't realise wattles were so shallow rooted ... great shame about the really big one - it had flowered gloriously!! I wonder what will be planted to replace them?
15 Aug, 2010
was indeed a huge gale Cristina! I slept right through it, as is my wont, lol I'm a very sound sleeper. I live in Sydney, we do not often get gales like that.
Have no idea Cate, if they will be replaced. probably not I would say but the council have reganerations programs at the park, so even if a tree is not planted inthe exact same spot, there is regeneration going on :o)

ahh - then i see an opportunity for you to put something there that you think would enhance ... have done this myself in the past - slipped in and planted something interesting and left a label on it so people will know it's not a weed - it's great to see them growing and happy - just a suggestion mind LOL =))
16 Aug, 2010
I have known people do that before, but you are forgetting the Council.
They come in and rip up 'foreign' plants that they have not planted :o(

Great photos Pip, but how sad seeing the damage done to the trees! That must have been quite a gale to uproot them like that! Nice to see Jenni and Francis getting in on the photo shoot by the way, lol!
