Looks just like a tiered Black Mondo Grass, I do like unusual foliage.

Is it black Angela? Or is it just the light?

Karen it is very dark green with a red tinge to the outside of the leaves.......
Thank you Janey, we were lucky the GC must have had all the house plants recently delivered. they had a huge selection to chose from, took us ages to make a decision!
Siris it looks black, but in fact dark green....we liked the multi stemmed effect.....
Shirley it is it goes with the gold pot really well....

Can't believe this Dd....just looking up from my iPad and what am I looking at....my very own Dracaena! Forgot about it....water it now and again, and yes dark green with red margins. Very pleased it cleans the air, that is something I've learnt! Also, the one I have is more weeping than sparky like yours...

I have managed to kill all mine by putting them outdoors in the summer and scorching them. I like them though...might get another one some day.

Me too as you can gather Karen..:)) they are very accommodating and kind to us...pumping out fresh breathable air for the odd drop of water every couple of months...now that's my kind of houseplant....and you scorched yours outside! Only joking...

Stunning combo Angela. I had no idea these were therapeutic! We had one for years, but it objected to being neglected when we went away for 4 weeks last year, so it's had to go :(. But I would love to find a dark one like this - so unusual.

Sheila thank you...I am sorry my photograph is rather misleading, the leaves are not as dark as the picture conveys, I have cataracts in both eyes and if I upload photos in the wrong light or in the evening they are nothing like the real thing .....
Sandra we are lucky to have three daughters who know our tastes! and very generous too....glad you like it!
Janey how funny! I am not surprised you didn't realize you had the same plant, the colour in my pic is way off!! they can be pruned when they start drooping, apparently!
Karen this will stay inside all year....... there are some lovely varieties, we liked the variegated ones, but they would not have suited the container..

That's a great photo, DD! I like the rather "bushy" appearance it has. We have had one for at least 10-12 years. My wife bought it in the supermarket where she used to work. We used to keep it in a corner of our living room where there is a small window. Then when my wife retired about 4 years ago our daughter gave her two budgies as a retirement & Christmas present. They put them in an enormous cage & the cage was put int he only available space in the living room - right where the Dragon Tree was!

We let the birds fly free most of the time but they discovered they could nibble at the tree & ended up nibbling the growing points off! We were worried the tree might cause them some ill effect but, no, it didn't. I moved the tree into the "spare" bedroom my wife used as her "study" & it lived there for a couple of years. The tips rejuvenated & the tree didn't seem any worse off for its treatment from the budgies.

A couple of summers it was placed outside on the balcony but where the sunlight couldn't reach it but last summer I placed it in a different place & this time it was affected by the sunlight & a great many leaves were scorched & fell off. Even though I moved it back into the permanent shade it sulked all summer! Towards the end of the summer it seemed to make a comeback but as it had only 3 very long bare stems so I cut the top 2ft off of one trunk & tried to root it. I had no success even though I read they root quite easily. Where I cut it back it has now made a new shoot which is growing nicely now. This year I will cut another trunk back to try to get it to branch out lower down & hopefully give us some more foliage. I will take care this year not to place it where the sun can burn its leaves!

Like this so much, Angela, that I’ve finally added it to favourites!

Hope you’ll come to Malvern in May.

My word Balcony your Dragon tree has led quite a chequered existence, must be a tough plant! Karen left her plant outside in the sun and scorched it!
Sheila we shall be there God willing!
