Yes Spritz.....an absolute stunner.....

THIS time I'm happy with T&M...I bought 5 plug-plants and grew them on, and then I saw this Gaura in a GC last week for a colossal price! :-)

What a strong colour for a Gaura - lovely.

I read about it in one of the gardening magazines AFTER I'd ordered the plugplants - it said it would be the 'plant of the year'... Just for once, I was ahead of the game! Hehe! How good was that?

Brill!

she is beautiful

This is a pretty photo.
I bought my first Gaura last year.
I'm attempting to make more plants from cuttings.
Doing quite well, but rather a slow process !

29 Jun, 2009

Well done - I haven't tried that! They aren't particularly hardy plants, are they, so I should have a go.

29 Jun, 2009

You can cut pieces off and put them in water.
They root that way....
I've been experimenting with rooted pieces in jars of rainwater in my kitchen ! Lol.

That's what I do with Penstemon cuttings...it does work! :-)

29 Jun, 2009

I find it works even better with Gaura.... try it :o)

29 Jun, 2009

Do they have to be non-flowering shoots? Or pieces?

29 Jun, 2009

I think non-flowering shoots are best.
I have one in the kitchen right now with oodles of roots.
I keep forgetting to plant it in compost. Lol.
Do you find non-flowering shoots best for Penstemon ?
I don't seem so successful with those as with Gaura..

29 Jun, 2009

Yes, definitely. I had to remove a 'Garnet' which went very woody and had no new growth at its base, so I took loads of cuttings from the top shoots - and have a row of them outside the greenhouse!

I should have several new Penstemons from that poor plant next year.

How big do these get, Spritz? We are still looking for back of border plants.

4 Jul, 2009

Hmmm. I wouldn't call them 'back of the border' plants, more in the middle. They grow to about 2'6", I suppose, depending on which one/s you get.

Oh - are we talking about Gauras or Penstemons? The above was about Penstemons!

Gauras are definitely 'front' to 'middle' plants - so that they can drift about like butterflies amongst the other plants! The flowers all appear at the end of the stems. Again, the tallest one I have is a little above 2'6".

oooh this is nice Spritz, i just bought a new one, i lost mine last year...my new one is called 'Passionate Blush'... yours is even nicer i think.

5 Jul, 2009

I've been checking all mine for non-flowering shoots - but there aren't any! I suppose I'll have to take the cuttings from small flowering ones and pinch out the buds??

5 Jul, 2009

i am not sure how to do these in all honesty Spritz, sounds good to me....do they not set seed? if no i'll have a go too and we can swap if you like?

5 Jul, 2009

No - I've never seen any seed pods, so I don't think so, Angie. Tt has managed to get cuttings to root - so we should try, shouldn't we?

5 Jul, 2009

I meant the Gaura. So thanks for the height detail. Will have to get one or 2.

5 Jul, 2009

Hi Angie/Spritz ~
I've just made a blog with a photo of my rooted cuttings...
Gaura are easy for rooting, so please have a go...
I put rainwater in a vase or a jam jar and pop in a few bits from the Gaura... .....and very soon.... oodles of roots.. :o)

5 Jul, 2009

Thanks, Tt - I'll take a look!

Theoldgunner, do you need some ideas of back-of-border tall plants? I'd be happy to PM you a list??

5 Jul, 2009

thanks TT going on over there now...
