Hi everybody. I have been AWOL for some time – so much to do this year! – and have missed you all.
However, I could not resist sharing this photo of a Dahlia which we bought from a small garden centre about two months ago. Having gone away last Tuesday, when a bloom was just beginning to open I was amazed, on my return last evening to find it had turned into this glorious monster – 10 inches in diameter! I have never seen such a large bloom. I have ploughed through half of GoY’s Dahlia picture gallery and have, so far, only found references to something similar posted by Doctorbob, Gardengnome and Greenthumb in 2009 and like Bob’s, the photo does not do it justice as it is a bright yellow but the sunlight ‘fades’ it on camera.

What a wonderful bloom .I just love dalias ,I grow them mostly from seed [collected from lovely ones that I see during the summer ]. I am waiting for the dark red foliaged ones to start blooming this year , all are very slow .

Thanks, all. I measured it again this morning and it has either spread to just over 11 inches or my hurried measurement on Monday was inaccurate. I can't wait for the other buds to open. There are seven on the way.

You sound like my brother use to with me .. we were always vying for the biggest and best.. Lol His would have been the size of a dustbin lid by now ! he use to claim to use runner beans as a bridge across the ditch for his wheelbarrow ...:o))

I can make no claim to challenge your brother's Runner Beans this year Amy. Thanks to the long Spring drought and the shortage of bees mine are only just beginning to move. Bet he didn't have a 3ft Daffodil like mine last year, though! :>))
