Thanks, Bamboo and Moon Grower. I guess you are right about the planting time. I did water it well at the time but went away in early August. There was no rain at the time so I guess the trouble started at that time. Do the phots suggest any alternative cause?

Magnolias hate root disturance. Spring planting is the best chance of getting them established

Very, very belated thanks Andrew. My apologies. I thought I had replied saying that I had subsequently staked it more effectively. In my, then, ignorance (not that there's been much improvement on that score!) I was running a question and a blog at the same time. My thanks to all who advised on both. The "buds" still appear to be O.K.
