Gardeners World Live Show 2013

There was no TV coverage of this show this year. I went to this last year with my friend Meadowland. Rather sadly she couldn’t make it this year, so I have put a few photos on for those of you who couldn’t make it.
GWL is not known for its show gardens, but there were a few that could give you good ideas for your own garden. I loved this garden with its vertical walls and very low maintenance planting of Sedums:
I thought these were great, just ivy trained on a metal cage!
More gardens. Some of these were designed by young Horticultural students under the guidance of Cleve West. (You know the multiple Chelsea medal garden designer)
Some favourite plants – love these astrantia, wonder how many year I will have to wait for my little tiddler to look like this?
Lucky enough to hit the plant stalls before the rain came tumbling down.
So then retreated inside the floral marquee for even more delights – here are just a few:
This was my favourite outdoor exhibit with this lovely old vintage van that had been set up as a kind of shop – so much to look at. I could have stayed a lot longer! I thought it was really charming.
Another part of the outside area, mainly designed by local councils as alternative planting schemes to the usual Victorian style. Some were quite inspiring, see what you think:
This was another good idea – We’ve all seen mirrors in the garden before, this was a double mirror set slightly behind the first one. The effect was quite confusing, you weren’t quite sure what was real and what was a reflection. don’t think the photo really shows this effect, but may be worth a try!
Then off to the floral marquee. The weather was looking decidedly dodgy by this stage. Lots of great exhibitors were in there. I didn’t take photos as they can all get a bit samey, so wont bore you with those. This stand however took my breath away. All of these are water plant ideas. Don’t think the photos do it justice as you cant really see all the wonderful reflections. They must have used black ink or something similar. So, so lovely….
And these are the people responsible for all this :
Ok folks, that’s it for now. Hope you enjoyed it.

I wonder why it didn't get any TV coverage, this year?
Anyway, great photos, PL...and glad that you enjoyed it, despite the weather...and the missing ingredient. I'm sure she'll be champing at the bit, next year! :)

Do you know M. I didn't even bother to look! I expect so, but if you could get just the bowl it would be good fun to plant it up. Hello Tracey, glad you like the photos, where are the ones you took? I'm sure yours would be totally different to mine!
Hello Kf, nice to hear from you again. I know Meadowland was worried about you You disappeared off the planet!. I do hope she will be champing at the bit. I cant wait until next year though....

Ho, ho that comment must have crossed M!

That red bowl will still be there, J...or...dare I say...an even BETTER one! X

Oh thank you so much for the tour around, Poppylover, I've so enjoyed the day with you! Your photos are superb and you've made more determined than ever to plant my Sedum bed. Thank you.

Another crossed comment, PL! Yes, I know...
...that's the trouble with all this virtual reality. It is real, but, when the hardware breaks down, it all vanishes!
And yes, there's no doubt! Apart from her general addiction, she's after that red bowl water-feature... ;)))

Lovely blog, thank you for sharing your day with us. GWL was the first flower show I took my partner to, he was apprehensive at first but the range of techno gadgets converted him, thank goodness! Disappointing that it wasn't covered by tv broadcasts this year .... a ploy too increase tickets sales next year maybe ;-)

Thanks for all your lovely comments everyone. ML sorry to have to break this news but just been onto the Waterside site to have a look at the bowls. I expect like me you were thinking they were ceramic? Well in fact they are fibre glass and priced at £105 just for the bowl. Don't know if you would want it in your hall. I would love one for the garden but at that price maybe think again!

Goodness! That's expensive!! It must be getting that finish which costs so much...?
Still...no possibility of frost damage, at least...

Lots of interesting ideas - I specially liked the border of heuchera allium and osteospermum. Thank you for tour.

Some great shots Poppy, and the water planting was superb.

I loved that blog, well done on all those beautiful pictures, amazing garden ideas too.
I like the bowls but a word of warning, do not know if they are the same materials, but I bought my daughter one, looks very similar to those, in bronze, it sprung a leak not long after it was planted up and it was supposed to be for water and water plants. Such a shame I was disappointed with the purchase. The problem was I could not complain about it because I bought it on line and had no idea where I got it from. lol, memory again.

ps although after seeing those big bowls planted up with garden compost and plants I have now got an idea that will allow it to be used again, if not for water but plants.

Phew Olive, what a disappointment, just another small thought - how about putting a smaller bowl inside the bigger bowl that would take water and then filling in the outside with pebbles and or plants? Glad you enjoyed the tour Stroller. Karen and Meadow, I agree its really expensive, I'm sure there must be a cheaper way to achieve this look. Steragram, I liked that combination too. Ive got some ophiopogon planted in the wrong place, so this should remind me to move it.

what a good idea Poppy, will have a word with daughter and see what she thinks about that one -thank you :O)

Hi Poppylover, I went to GWL on the Friday, and had a great day although I was a bit dissapointed that the stalls had much the same plants really, but did find a few. Also was a bit dissapointed when I went to watch GW on TV and it wasnt televised :(

lol it's rather depresssingly impressive (when I look at the slabs of concrete paving outside my back door!)

Hi Daylily, you must have filled your garden with some lovely plants, having Malvern almost on your doorstep. I got to see the gardens this year thank goodness. I was disappointed to not see it on TV too. Hi Fran, yes we had a great day. You need a break from doing all the hard work and get a bit of inspiration into the bargain sometimes.
22 Jun, 2013
sorry, Poppy, I just had one of those days!

HI Poppylover, GWL is closer to me than Malvern, last year being the first time I ever went there, when we all met up. Me and hubby go to GWL every year (I think this year was our 10th time!) and we do have a great day out. You know what its like its nice to try and find something a bit different to what you already have :))
23 Jun, 2013
Hope you get a better day today Fran :-))
Hey Daylily. Ive just read an article in Amateur Gardening re the future of GWL show. Apparently the show organisers pulled out of TV coverage at the last minute in order to save money. The numbers visiting the show were down to 80,000 last year- they were looking for 100,000 plus. The venue is also in question. Apparently one of this years stall holders told AG the show could move from the NEC to Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. That would be very inconvenient for me and I'm sure anyone else travelling up from the South. So the future is looking a bit uncertain for that particular show unfortunately.

Hi Poppylover, cant believe though Monty didnt even mention it either did he! Oh it would be a shame as I do look forward to it each year, but then sometimes it is nice to have a change. We have talked about going to Chelsea but never have so that would be an adventure Im sure we would love to do :)) I did 'like' the GWL page on FAcebook and they said on there that it was mentioned on the local news and something about saving money :)

Well lets hope they give it another chance. People generally seem to have been put off gardening by the weather we've been getting the past couple of years, but still seem to flock to the GC's as soon as we get a bit of sun. Its only us diehards that are gluttons for punishment...lol.
