A little trip to Lavender land

Hi folks, now summer has finally arrived here in the southeast, Ive not been on Goy so much recently. Ive just been soaking up the summer sun.
I did however, find time a couple of weeks ago to visit Downderry Lavender, you may remember them from Hampton Court where they won a gold medal for their stand in the Floral marquee.

So come with me down a little Kentish Lane -

Tucked away in a little quiet corner – we find Downderry!

Then just around the corner was a beautiful walled garden, just as you may suspect, filled with all kinds of lavender

A few nice stands to browse and choose

Then the educational area, housing the still where they produce lavender oil and products

These are some of the products in their finished state
A pretty little shop…

Ok, back outside. Fields of lavender ajoin the garden, which will later be cut and harvested

Nearly at the end of our visit now, before we go must’nt forget to show you this great big basket

They used it on one of their show stands and have now reproduced it in their nursery garden

Ooops, well lets just try that again. Here are some of the products in their finished state

And just a few goodies to take away home.

Anyone got a recipe for lavender biscuits??

Lovely interesting blog Poppy. Just add a few flowers to your normal biscuit mix. I think it should work ok.

Good to see you back, Poppy, and lovely blog. The "big basket" is wonderful! We've a Lavender farm in a nearby town . . . I'll see if they have a recipe.

There was a recipe published in the Telegraph recently for Lavender biscuits, will be on their webste, it used the small leaves from new shoots, finely chopped.

Yes Terra, shame we haven't got smelly vision..lol. Thanks Cinders, Im not sure if its best to add the flowers or the leaves?? but will have a look at the Telegraph recipe - thanks Lizziebee. Amy Ive been to Heacham - Its the best. I used to collect french lavenders, but have given up trying to get them through the winters weve had recently. Sheilabub, thanks I hope you can find a recipe for me. I promise to send you some biscuits! Hi Sheilar glad you enjoyed it. The scent was strongest in the big field. Could have got drunk on it!

WOw fantastic! Love the basket ::) I like Lavander in the garden but I dont like the oils..reminds me of old Aunties..that all them smelt of lavendar and moth balls lol

I love lavender, I have loads of L. Little Lady and a few different coloured french lavenders. I wonder how the nursery coped with all the rain we've had this year? I wouldn't say no to one of those pretty cups either:-)

What a lovely place PoppyL! I love the Lavendar cart and also the huge basket - wonderful! I bet the scent in the fields was pretty heady too! :)

I love the smell of lavender, my mum always had some in her cupboards, my dad hated it if she popped some in his wardrobe, lo,. don`t think I`d like my biscuits to taste of it though....
It was wonderful to be out in the sunshine Poppy, all eight days of it, the rains came back last Saturday, grrrrr.

PoppyL you forgot to mention the BEES. it was absolutly buzzing there was'nt it. Seems along time ago now.
And you for got to mention the cake & smoothy you had, Lol.

; Sheilabub.
Hi Pixi, yes it does have a reputation for 'old lady' perfume. I like the candles, especially in the bath/shower, really relaxing.
BA, all the english lavenders seemed to have coped well with all the recent bad weather. It was the french lavenders that did not look so great.
Petal you would have loved it, its not so large as Heacham but they packed alot in.
Lincs Im not sure about the biscuits either. I just thought I would give them a try - my hubby eats anything!! lol Hope the sun is back with us soon.
Willi, yes, I did forget about the bees. I cant remember about the cake and the smoothie either. Are you sure that was me! lol

Quite Sure :-)

Wonderful ! I would have loved to see that place. Funny thing - I bought a bottle of lavender essential oil yesterday. I've always got some here. It was interesting to read about how it is made :o)

Fabulous pics poppy. I can almost smell the lavender. Jx

2 Aug, 2012

lol I Googled "recipe lavender" and up popped suggestions for shortbread, cookies, and cake - plus lots more, too many to list!

2 Aug, 2012

I'm not sure it would eat as well as it smells. If you see what I mean. Perhaps a fraction of a suggestion would be ok. Jx

or just a sprinkle on top? sure I've seen lavender sugar shapes or somethign like that to decorate tops of cakes. that'd be on Google, too, in with "lavender cake"

3 Aug, 2012

Yes fran, come to think of it, I've seen that too somewhere. Jx

Well, I went to the Lavender farm, and no recipe, but I was shown a Cookbook by Jekka McVicar, and thought "oh, I've got her Herb book at home". So I've just looked, and she gives a recipe for Lavender biscuits!

4 oz butter, 2 oz caster sugar, 6 oz SR flour; 2 tablespoons fresh chopped lavender leaves and 1 teaspoon lavender flowers removed from spike. The leaves are added to the dough mix, then when rolled out she scatters the flowers over and lightly presses them in with the rolling pin. Cut into small rounds, bake at mark 7 for 10 - 12 minutes, and cool.

Hope it works! x

Hi Sheilar, well that seems straightforward enough. Ill have a go at those first chance I get and report back to you when Ive had a few. If theyre any good Ill keep my promise to send you some if you PM me your address :0)) I hope some other Goyers give them a try too.

10 Aug, 2012

I'm not "Sheilar"(!) but we're easily confused :))

It was a lovely idea, but please don't go to all the trouble of sending biscuits through the post . . . I'd only eat them, lol.

11 Aug, 2012

I'll eat them! PoppyL is a fab Baker on the quiet... and we've (OH and I) always enjoyed her homemade goodies :o)))

11 Aug, 2012

So sorry Sheilabub, didnt mean to confuse you with the lovely Sheilar. It would be no trouble to send you some biscuits,- unless you are watching your waistline! Thankyou for the vote of confidence Petaltracey, let me know when you want to come for lunch!

11 Aug, 2012

I AM watching my waistline, but I LOVE biscuits . . . OK Poppylover, I'll PM you! It will be fun to try them.

11 Aug, 2012

Does that mean Lavendar Biscuits will be on the menu?? :o)))
