How much sun do chilli plants need everyday in summer?
By Gracesn
Spain
I bought a new chilli plant with plenty of red chillis already. I water them everyday (small amount of water) and they get around 3 hours of sun every afternoon. I live in Barcelona.
A lot leaves are dried up and falling... And many are drooping downwards.. What wrong with it? Is it too much sun/ water or not enough?

"chillis like lots of root space, and plenty to drink"
Thanks! Cause the plant lady told me to water it twice a week and I doubt it is enough... I also did some more research and they said an average of 4 hours of sunlight in the afternoon is great so i'll slowly build up the hours since a rapid change can shock the plant.
This is the first time I tried out this forum/ blog sites and ask questions and I got a reply right away ;) thanks again

Ola, Gracesn, You asked, "how much sunlight." The answer is "how much can you give it"?
Chillies originated in hot countries like Mexico to Brazil, India, Pakistan, Thailand etc.
How much water is more difficult to answer, but I'll try.
Are you growing in pots or in the ground?
In the ground - water every day.
In pots - push a wooden barbeque skewer into the pot down to the chilli roots, leave it in place for 5 minutes. Take it out, if it's dry or nearly dry water gently until water flows out of the bottom of the pot. After 10 minutes, water it again. Water in the morning and if need be, in the late afternoon.
Do you know what type of chilli you have?

Looks the same as the chilli plant on this website but much smaller, I've got them in a little pot on my balcony: http://www.masdudiable.com/A55C37/mdd.nsf/dx/Chilli-Cayenne.htm?opendocument&comments
Gonna get the wooden skewer tomorrow ;) I normally water them before sun set. Is it better when it is watered in the morning?
Another question... Why are the leaves are all closed (curled up) and drooping downward... I just removed a lot of dried ones this morning as they fall off my plant... Only the bottom layer ones turned yellow.
Thank you so much for the tips!

I would say its lack of water is the cause of the yellow leaves
same as if we get too much sun and not enough moisture, you shrivel up and get all dry and wrinkly
I would water of an evening when its not so sunny, that way the plant wont get scorched in the morning sun
I would also say this I have chiili and cayenne growing some in the ground some in grow bags the ones in grow bags I have 3 to a bag this is possibly one too many, hence why I said about needing lots of space

True... If I want my chilli to grow, I'll have to get a bigger pot ;) So what are the things I have to do to transplant it to a bigger pot? Just a bigger pot and new soil to fill up the space?
Thank you! xxxx

From your description and looking at the web link, I think the chillies you are growing are Thai chillies (Capsicum fruitescens), about 75mm-125mm long and 5mm-10mm wide. It has the same qualities as the one in the photo.
You said "So what are the things I have to do to transplant it to a bigger pot? Just a bigger pot and new soil to fill up the space?" - YES.
If your chillies are producing fruit, it's doubtful it will get much taller.
As these plants grow to 1 metre tall, next year when you plant any, think; tall chilli big pot. In Spain I would recommend you grow them in bucket sized pots.
Watering in the morning ensures the plant has enough moisture to see it through the hottest part of the day and watering it again (if needed) in the late afternoon ensures it has enough water for evening and through the night.
I hope this helps. If it doesn't, at least it gave you something to read.

thanks and it helped alot! So I guess my chilli is not going to get any bigger - no need to get the bigger pot. I'll water it in the morning again. I hope it is the Thai chilli you are talking about, I love them!

Try growing Scots Bonnet next year. They are one of the worlds top 10 hottest chillies. They also have a fruity taste likened to apricot. Lovely!

Will def try to find the Scots Bonnet! love the spicy and the apricot!
Why do they wilt and esp in the late afternoon? How can I fix that with my chilli? Thanks!

Watering in the morning ensures the plant has enough moisture to see it through the hottest part of the day and watering it again (if needed) in the late afternoon ensures it has enough water for evening and through the night.
If they are still wilting during the late afternoon ensure that you water until water flows through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Wait 5 minutes to allow the water to be drawn back up into the pot, then water again.
There are water retentive gel granules you can buy to add to your compost mix which will stop the compost drying out too quickly.
It's probably too late to add it now but it's something to remember for next year.
If you can get the water retentive gel granules, try putting some in the drip tray. I've never tried this, but it might help.

chillis like lots of root space, and plenty to drink, dont know about the sun part but they do like heat, dont think you have a problem with that part
