This plant was already in our garden when we bought the house 16 years ago it only flowers for about a month a year but it is stunning.

I see what you mean junie, we maybe need to see a leaf as well, I was in a local garden centre today and they had an unusual hydrangea for sale( very expensive) with similar shaped flowers almost with a greenish tinge-- i'll look it up and see

When does it flower? Deciduous or evergreen? And a close up of leaves, as asked for above, would be good.

I thought it looked a bit like a a hydrangea paniculata too - again, I'm no expert.

It is the single stemedness which makes me doubt that it is one of the Hydrangea paniculata types, they usually have multiple stems, unless very carefully trained to be a standard and looked after to keep them that way.
There is one called Pinky-Winky, awful name, but a lovely colour.

It could be Hydrangea quercifolia. If the leaves are Oak shaped then that what it is. Google it and look at the images it looks very similar

this is the first time I have had the nerve to answer a question instead of ask one, so be gentle with me! Looks a bit lilac-ish, but what time of year does it flower, it is stunning.
