Cordyline branching halfway up

Hi, whilst having a weed/rubbish pickup from my front garden today, I noticed that a couple of shoots are growing out horizontally, about halfway up the trunk. The shoots are currently about two inches long although there is also a knobble on the other side which looks like it might become another shoot.

Don't they usually shoot from the bottom or am I mistaken?

Sometimes from the bottom, but they also do it up the stem at times too. Cordylines are related to the 'ti tree' plants, which look quite similar, that we all grow as houseplants in Britain, and as you know, they tend to put out side branches too. You can either remove them, or let them grow, depends how you want the plant to look.
