Sweet Corn

Hertfordshire, United Kingdom Gb

I have been growing sweet corn. I have read books telling me they will be ready once the silks go brown. Mine are going brown but do I wail until the whole silks go brown. Also do the cobs open on the stem.....

Hello Chrissy, Firstly may I say how sensible you are to grow your own. When you pick n' pan them straight from your garden they bear no resemblance to bought ones because within minutes of being picked the sugar turns to starch. It's difficult to say if yours are ready but they are a bit late in the year. If you peal back the outer layers and press the corn with your thumb nail it should emit juice in which case it's ready. Don't know where you live but in the UK the trouble with growing them is that like outdoor tomatoes they need a long season. I overcome this by rrotecting them with glass in spring then remove it later.

also grew sweetcorn for the first time this year.
The first four that I picked were large,
gorgeous,very sweet and juicy..
I left the remainder on the plants for too long because they were tough and not as sweet.Last week I dug them all up I have ended up giving them to someone with chickens,
The problem really was that they were ready at the same time as so many other things growing in the garden.
