Well, there's trellis and then there's trellis - personally, I always use the fence panel type trellis, 6 foot wide and any depth you want, because it's much stronger and will actually support climbing plants. The diamond shaped, thinner wood lathe stuff doesn't last five minutes in my experience, and certainly isn't strong enough to take the weight of, say, wisteria, honeysuckle or Campsis.
Trellis is also a good way of increasing the height of a fence without blocking too much light. The fence panel ones can also be used as dividers in a garden, to partially separate one area from another.

Hi Bamboo. Quite right. As I moved from an 'exotic plants nut' to 'cottage (jungle) garden nut' I found that they won't support any decent clematis either. Well worth buying the good stuff, or building your own.

Yes. Around my back garden I have the strong 6 ft. type described by Bamboo ..
much more robust for supporting climbers.
