You did say yours was in full bloom! Lovely
2 Jan, 2012
Very nice and very early, plants are getting ahead of themselves I hope we dont suffer for this later in the winter.
2 Jan, 2012
Good to see , isn't it ?
2 Jan, 2012
This winter's interesting :) ...but duly noted Plantoholic. I hope daylight hours are a factor in conifer dormancy as well as temperature so that expected downtime isn't too disrupted by the lack of cold.
2 Jan, 2012
Oh my, I have never known it to bloom this early! How wonderful! I have a pink coloured one, but I prefer the red.
2 Jan, 2012
Gorgeous !!!
2 Jan, 2012
How lovely to see that brilliant colour,Terra..It really is wonderful :o)..
2 Jan, 2012
Yes, there is a red one like this just down the road from here and it is just starting to flower....usually flowers in March-April. Wonderful, absolutely wonderful...I wish it was like this every winter!
2 Jan, 2012
very nice Terra..
2 Jan, 2012
That's doing well for mid winter :o)
2 Jan, 2012
Oh, i love this Tt...
2 Jan, 2012
this winter is really strange. But I don't mind, lol. lovely colour:)
2 Jan, 2012
Lovely and bright - so cheerful Terra.
2 Jan, 2012
Wow - gorgeous TT!
2 Jan, 2012
I love this Terra and for some reason (i've had two) they both died. Perhaps third time lucky this year.Yours looks lovely.
2 Jan, 2012
Lovely Terratoonie:)
2 Jan, 2012
How lovely to have such a show in January! :o) I have 2 orange flowered varieties and was surprised to see one tiny flower on one of them this time of year!! no comparison eh? lol
2 Jan, 2012
Wow thats jsut beautiful! :)))))))))
2 Jan, 2012
Like everyone else ... I love this, Terra ... but would you please tell me how to pronounce it ... lol!
2 Jan, 2012
Japanese quince Shirley!!!!! sorry to butt in :o)
2 Jan, 2012
Lol, Neellan ... that's one name for it! . . . . .
2 Jan, 2012
Yeah, I just say quince 'cos I can't pronounce it!! ;-)
2 Jan, 2012
Apparently it is pronounced 'keeno-maylees'
Better to say Japanese quince, as Neena and Sheila said lol
2 Jan, 2012
Yeah, I've always called it 'kee-no-me-lees' Hywel has it right I'm sure.
Here's an audio of how it is said (useful site)

Just highlight the link, right click and choose open in new tab, safe.

I so wanted to ask that question earlier...but felt really silly at doing so....thanks Shirley T x
2 Jan, 2012
Thanks everyone for your lovely comments and for explaining how to pronounce "Chaenomeles" ..... I wasn't sure !
... and Sheila will tell us how to pronounce "Quince" ... LOL.
This photo actually only shows the top part of the shrub ... there are more blossoming sections lower down, and further along ... and it has been flowering away like this during December, too ...
Rose ... that's sad yours died. This one gets lots of sunshine, but other than that, no special treatment.
3 Jan, 2012
Brilliant advice on this site ... not only from growing plants ... but how to pronounce their names too ... thanks everyone ... :o)
3 Jan, 2012
Thats interesting Terra - I had one of these a long long time ago. I planted it in shade as thats what all the books tell you and I was in need of plants for shade. Mine died too after a few years, but never flowered as well as yours so it obviously does better in the sun. Have another go Rose!
3 Jan, 2012
This quince has been growing there happily for a few years now. I did actually plant it with the lower half in the shade, and it stayed that way for several years ...
... but, sadly, last summer, my neighbours wrenched a lot of my front fencing down, so the lower half of that side is now very exposed... I hope the quince can cope with the different conditions !
3 Jan, 2012
Hope it survives Terra - just keep an eye on it, the one I had died very slowly, the leaves went yellow before finally dropping off and the branches died back - so you should get lots of warning. - fingers and toes crossed for you!
3 Jan, 2012
Thanks Poppylover...
I might try taking cuttings from it this year...
3 Jan, 2012
Mine is flowering as you know TT. It is in full sun as well, no option for shade.
3 Jan, 2012
Yes, my Chaenomeles seems to like the sunshine.
I planted a pink Quince cutting from a friend in my back garden in the autumn ...
... and I now realise it is in rather a shady area. I guess I'll have to move it if it doesn't do well there ...
3 Jan, 2012
Crikey Tt.....that's early isn't it?? Wonderful colour for now. I think my clematis armandii has it's first buds on :)))
3 Jan, 2012
Hi Janey ..
I must check my armandii ... ;o)
3 Jan, 2012
Those are are just Gorgous Terra, itrs hard to believe they are blooming at the moment. my garden is in a deep sleep, can't say I blame it in this dreadful weather!
4 Jan, 2012
Hi Pansyp ... Thanks ...
I checked these Quince flowers today, and so far they have survived the storms !
4 Jan, 2012
Pleased to hear they are surviving;0))
4 Jan, 2012
I'm still wondering how to pronounce 'trells'
;) j/k
5 Jan, 2012
Just sent you a P.M ;0))
5 Jan, 2012
Thanks Pansypotter...
I've just had a hectic day following the storms..
will catch up soon...
Thank you Severnside for picking up on "trells"...
I reckon I was thinking of my "Neighbours from Trell" who keep pulling down my fence near that Quince !
5 Jan, 2012
"Neighbours from Trell" Oh no I could tell you sagas about those, sorry to hear you endure it yourself Terra, sympathy :(
6 Jan, 2012
What a `pick me up` at this time of year, not a glimmer of a flower on my orange one.
6 Jan, 2012
Hi Stroller..
This is still covered in flowers, despite the recent storms.
Has been in bloom for a long while now. :o)
6 Jan, 2012
Just gorgeous TT....
8 Jan, 2012
Thanks Grandmage :o) x
8 Jan, 2012
It's looking beautiful!
The very mild weather all over the northern hemisphere is causing many plants to bloom very early.
We've had some really hot weather here in San Diego over the last 16 days. We've had some temps up to 94ºF./35ºC. in areas...which is really unusual for the first few days of January.
8 Jan, 2012
Thanks Delonix ...
I hope Puccini has his sun hat ;o)
8 Jan, 2012
Terratoonie:
I don't take Puccini out when it's this hot. He hates the hot weather!
9 Jan, 2012
Amazing Tt, I've had the odd flower on my very young 'geisha girl' but nothing like this:-)
9 Jan, 2012
Still mild in England.
Puccini would like England ;o)
I was out in my front garden today, tidying up ...
looked at the red Chaenomeles, and despite recent storms, it has more flowers than ever ! :o)
9 Jan, 2012
Yes, Puccini would love it there in England!
11 Jan, 2012
Quince does it for me, :))) do you do anything with the fruits Terra... !!(Jelly)
22 Jan, 2012
Delonix ... Please tell Puccini the English weather today is sunny but not too warm !
Hi Sue .. This Chaenomeles is covered in lots more new buds and flowers !!! It has been flowering for weeks and weeks ! No, I don't do anything with the quince fruits ...
22 Jan, 2012
noticed mine has buds Terra but not has big as yours, lovely plant :o))
22 Jan, 2012
Hi Sandra..
This quince has gone crazy this year.
Buds everywhere for weeks on end... Lol.
22 Jan, 2012
Lovely flowers and so early. My neighbour gives me her quinces and I make jelly with them. Gerry is eating through the last jar of it. I give her a jar in return as usually only makes 3 - 4 jars.
24 Jan, 2012
Lovely aren`t they, there is one in dads garden of which he loved, I`m very tempted to dig it up and bring it home with me, not sure about moving it at the moment...
24 Jan, 2012
Well done Linda on making the quince jelly.
Lincs ...
Maybe better to move your Dad's Chaenomeles after the possible frosts of February..
.... but whenever you move it, also take some cuttings. Quite easy to get started from cuttings .. :o)
24 Jan, 2012
Thankyou Terra, will take my pruners up next time I go..
24 Jan, 2012
:o))) good luck ...
It will be a nice memory of your Dad ...
24 Jan, 2012
I took a few cuttings from the neighbours bush but don't know if they have taken yet as they only look like sticks at the moment.
25 Jan, 2012
Beautiful...mines not in flower yet!
27 Jan, 2012
Thanks Red aly...
This quince has gone crazy ...
It is still full of buds and blossoms...
...been flowering away all winter !
27 Jan, 2012
do you get fruit on yours Terra?
4 Mar, 2012
Hi Sandra ..
Yes, I get fruits, but I don't do anything with them...
Can I grow new baby quinces from the fruits ?
4 Mar, 2012
Those blossoms on the trellis are to die for...very Japaneseque :)Cannot grow them in my part of the world :(
18 May, 2012
Nice to see this one again Terra..
18 May, 2012
Hi Devika ...
That's a pity these don't survive in Uttarpradesh.
I guess you can compensate by growing other shrubs which wouldn't survive in the UK ?
Thanks Sue ...
These flowered for months, all through the cold winter !
18 May, 2012
Nice :o))))
18 May, 2012
beautiful climber and lovely bright blooms.
