last year my aubergines flowered wel but no fruit developed am trying again, do i need to hand pollinate?

yes, best to hand-pollinate, as you say. also begin feeding with a high-potash food such as phostrogen or other liquid tomato feed once fruits start forming. It is also best to thin out the developing fruits to encourgae fewer, but larger, fruit. Hope this helps.
