Csaycell, the top side will show a smooth conical bud covered with leaf sheathes, that will be surrounded by ring-shaped scars where last years leaves came out, the underside will be rough and lumpy, sometimes with old roots, sometimes with poka-dot scars of old roots. When in doubt--they can come in the doggonedest shapes--plant on it's side or edge: that will slow, but not stop, bloom.
