I want to grow some potatoes, but am I too late for the early ones, the ground is only just getting firm enough to walk on.
Can anyone suggest names, they are so many at the Garden Centre, so I don't know which are which.

We won't get our first early tatties in for a couple of weeks.

We liked Casablanca last year. Rather like Lady Cristl but less of a temptation to the slugs.

I am going to try Rocket this year to see how they do in my allotment.

I nearly always plant one row late March, then I go away for a week and plant a second row of the same type , Foremost, during the first week of April. The April planting is mostly ready first, so there is no hurry.

That's very interesting Janpled. I've planted a row very early under black plastic - wish I'd kept a few back for a later planting to compare now.

Lady Christi has had some good reviews but I found Rocket to be tasteless when grown in bags. Sutton's Foremost has got to be my all time favourite. By the way the Pound Shop has organic potato fertiliser, 1.25 Kg.

You’re not too late to plant spuds they were traditionally planted on St Patrick’s Day 17th March but the ground is so wet I do wonder whether it’s worth waiting until the end of March. I have chosen Arran Pilot first earlies they did well last year and are a good all round spud I have also got some Maris Peer second earlies they did well last year. My main crops are going to be 3 new ones to me and they are king Edwards, Sarpo Mira and blue belle and we have got some Salad Blue for the novelty of growing blue spuds.
