why am I seeing so many fields full of poppies?

Perhaps the farmers are finally not using systemic herbicides? Or the fields are 'set aside'

or they are the crop that is being grown for poppy seeds for bread and its oils etc. we have a feild of poppies as the crop near by. they look stunning too.
but many organically raised cereal crops are being grown now as MG suggests.

if they are smallish poppies they will be the flanders field poppies
but if they are the larger variety poppies they are probably grown for the seeds like seaburngirl said
