Hello! I bought my Prunus Kiku-shidare-zakura last year and it blossomed. This year I've got only one flower bud. I'd like to know why it's not flowering and what to do. Thank you.

On plant Prunus

Hi Jana and welcome to GoY. Where is your Prunus Kiku-shidare-zakura planted in the ground or in a container? Needs to be in reasonably fertile soil and growing in full sun. Could birds have pecked off the blossoms?

It was always in a sunny position in the the ground. But a few days ago I replanted it in the container because realised the soil in my garden was bad. If it is because the soil, will it start blossoming next year?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'the soil in my garden was bad', please elucidate. Moving any tree or shrub at this time of the year is an extremely risky business as both flower and leaf buds may well abort. Time to move, if you must, is when the tree is dormant.

Its possible that when you bought it the buds were already formed and it may have spent the time in between developing a good root system. Pity you dug it up at this time of year. Best now to keep it in the container until the autumn to avoid disturbing it again, and then replant in the ground when it has gone dormant ads MG says. If you are concerned about your soil quality excavate a larger hole than you did last time and back fill with some good soil.

Thank you for your responce. I know that it was not the best idea to replant it now, but I did not have much choice - the garden was flooded. It looks ok now and leaves are growing well. But I've got only one flower bud on the tree, unfortunately. I'm worried about if it does not bloom any more.

Does your garden regularly get flooded or was this a one of Jana? If it floods regularly you'll need to keep the tree in a large container but, remember, it wants to grow to 2.5 metres in height which means a large container.

How do I say thanks?
