bare rooted fruit trees are best planted when they are dormant late autumn or early winter, this prevents any root disturbance while the tree is in its active cycle. trees supplied in bio-degradable containers can be planted anytime as the roots are not disturbed but i think that spring is the best time as this gives the tree a full growing season to settle in before winter. dig the hole a fair bit wider than the width of the roots and backfill with a soil- compost mix, firm the soil down and put a liberal mulch round the base of the tree so tat the ground retains moisture. if the tree is grafted then ensure that the grafted joint is above the level of the soil.
