I'm tempted to say Tibouchina, but would like a sharper photo really.........

I've had a Tibouchina the last couple of years and it's an altogether chunkier plant, though the flowers are the same colour. The the buds are different too.

I have t.urvillianna, but I was thinking of the smaller flowered one, the name of which I can't remember.
I'll check Delonixs' photos..........

It looks very like an unusual little plant that I grew in my hanging baskets a few years ago - feel sure it's a long name beginning with 'C', so I'll have a look through my labels when I get to the greenhouse . . .

Meanie:
You're close, it's related to Tibouchina, the family: Melastomataceae. I've seen this plant before, however, can't remember the name.

Lynty... I hope this helps you ...

Thank you for all your help on my mystery plant. I think Delonix1 has nailed it as melastomaceae. Hopefully I can keep it over winter as it has been a delight for many months.

Melastomaceae is just the family with hundreds of species in it. This plant still needs a name.
Using Sheilabub's clue that it may start with a "C" how about Centradenia floribunda? ;-)

Well done Beattie - yes, I was going to say that Melastomaceae is just the family - and I honestly think you have cracked it! Centradenia is a basket plant, so I'm pretty sure you're right . . . hurray, it was driving me mad!

Well done Beattie..
I've googled pics of Centradenia floribunda and looks to be the one :o)

Yes, Melastamaceae is pretty big family...it has many genera...and many species in each genus.

I think you've got it! :>)
I found an article from San Francisco. I knew I remembered seeing this plant growing (and for sale) in the San Francisco Bay Area, when I lived there.

Lynty:
I think this plant is pretty tropical in origin, although, it tolerates cool temps (because it's native to the higher elevations of the tropics).
