Can anyone tell me whether a hazelnut tree would thrive in a garden that's right by the sea (south coast)?

Agree with Moongrower - they're pretty forgiving, growing almost anywhere, but will not appreciate salt spray. If you're growing it for the nuts, choose a variety of Corylus maxima.

Many thanks - will take a chance behind a tall privet hedge and hope it gives enough shelter from salt spray. Corylus maxima - OK. Had been looking at Corylus ennis and/or one called the Kentish cob.

Oh, apparently the Kent cob IS corylus maxima - so that's good!

Only hope you've no maritime squirrels that might be sailing by!

Ah, good, you found out - Kentish Cob is indeed a variety of Corylus maxima, as is 'purpurea'.

Plenty of maritime bunny rabbits, but no squirrels!
Kentish Cob ordered.

If it is sheltered from the salt spray yes... otherwise it will be challenged.
