Stepped stream - limited water movement

United Kingdom

I have already posted and asked for suggestions for this area, but I keep going back to a water feature. I have looked at some stepped streams. I need something that still looks ok when the water is not moving, because I will have to rely on a solar powered pump. Do you think a stepped stream would look ok with the water gathered in each step when the pump wasnt working?

you know it wouldnt be to hard to lift a little bit of tarmac at the edge near the fence.im building a corner pond at the moment if you look on my blogs . your idea would work but i realy dont think much of them solar pumps

Unless we drill into the house for the power, we would have to take the cable along the front and side of the house, so there would be quite a lot of tar to dig up. I know someone with solar panel in the house for heating the water, and she says even on bright days (not direct sunlight), she gets warm water, so maybe if I just get a strong enough panel?

i have had a a few solar powered water features over the years. i love them (each to his/her own NP. lol)
ok they dont work all the time and they are usualy not that big.. but if i had an electric one i would only put it on if i had visiters or on a special day. as for my solar one it makes me smile when i see it going as it a confirmation that the sun is shining. it was runnin in january this year. my solar feature definately works more than my sisters who has to switch hers on...

sounds good sandra if you keep fish you must have a cable run pump not that you are you understand.

i know nothing about fish....my solar feature is just water...

Thanks for that. I have no intention of having fish in it. Do you think a solar pump will have enough power to pump the water back up to the top of the stream?

i dont know i dont think so.a pumps power is measured when it is under its least pressure ie at water level.solar pumps are generaly for a little fountain etc on the surface.as you put it further down from wear it got to pump to it comes under more pressure from the water its pushing uphill.im not trying to rain on your bomfire just dont think its the tool to your job myself.why cant you drill into the house.if you do it between the bricks in the morter it wont make any differance surly.

Its a new house, and newly tarmaced driveway so I really dont want to start damaging it already. We will just have to do the garden with the resources we have.
Would it be silly looking to have a non moving stream, with small pools of water on each step, and then just a bubbling pebble pool at the bottom? I realise I would have to manually top up the water in each step, but that wouldnt be a big deal.

that would be fine with some nice planting

Thanks. What would be the best way to go about the stream? A preformed kit, or just dig the shape into the ground and use pond liner?

15 Apr, 2009

a baught one would be easier and formed plastic is actualy starting to look like wood etc

i agree that a preformed would be easiest i've seen some nice ones. but if you cant find what your looking for, where theres a will theres a way.
my solar feature pumps the water about ten inches its only just gets there but its been going all day. i must have a picture some where.
