what is the black stuff on the leaves and trunk of my camellia

Possibly sooty mould - this forms when the plant is infested, usually with scale insect - check the backs of the leaves for insects and the trunk.

You're in good company - last time I visited, at least half the camellias at Kew Gardens were affected by this
