on pinterest I saw the log path...what is between and under the logs to keep them steady?

I would use packed crushed stone underneath, and any preferred stone or bark chips between them. Note that they may deteriorate quickly, if they aren't a rot-resistant would, such as cedar, oak, or redwood, and/or have been well sealed a few days before setting--especially if your summers are long and hot, like mine!
